Meet the Governors

Lesley Ackrel

I have been on the governing body for over 10 years now, firstly as a Parent governor then as a Co-opted governor. I sit on the Teaching and Learning Committee.

I have two daughters both of whom have now left Wigginton Primary.

I have worked in the area of education for a number of years now - after completing a degree followed by a PGCE (Post Graduate Certificate in Education) I became a primary school teacher and, over a 12 year period, taught a variety of age groups in three different schools. In 2017 I became an Advanced Teaching Assistant then, more recently, a teacher at Huntington Primary Academy and currently work as a Teaching Assistant at Wigginton Primary.

Louise Battison: Chair of Governors

I am a co-opted governor with previous experience as a parent governor at my daughters’ primary school. I am a Chartered Tax Adviser and currently work in Strategy and Business Delivery at HM Revenue & Customs. I am also training to become an accredited coach with the European Mentoring and Coaching Council, supporting others in leadership, confidence, productivity, and career development. I enjoy mentoring colleagues from a range of backgrounds through a dedicated mentoring scheme.

Outside of work, I have two daughters, one of whom is still at school in York. I love reading (almost anything except computer coding or physics!), experimenting with new recipes in the kitchen, and walking along the clifftops and beaches on the East Coast. I am passionate about helping everyone feel welcome and able to reach their potential within the school community.

Paul Laycock: Headteacher

Before becoming headteacher at Wigginton Primary School, I had been teaching in York primary schools for 15 years.  After joining Wigginton Primary School as Deputy Headteacher in 2013, I became Headteacher in 2017.  I therefore serve on both the Teaching and Learning Committee and the Staffing and Finance Committee of the governing body.  I care very much about the school, pupils, staff and community and endeavour to serve them as well as possible.

Chair of Finance and Resources Committee: Richard Underwood

I moved to Wigginton in 2014 and started as a governor at Wigginton Primary in 2017. I have a background in IT and project management, and hope that I can offer my commercial experience to support the school in achieving its objectives. I am the chair of the finance and resource committee.

Chair of Teaching and Learning Committee: Felicity Langford

I have been a governor since July 2017 and have always really enjoyed being more involved in the school. Both of my daughters went to the school and loved their time there. They have recently moved on to secondary school but I am very pleased to remain as a governor, working with the other governors to continue to support Wigginton Primary in any way I can.

Before moving back to York, I worked in a professional services firm in London, initially as a chartered accountant and later as the senior manager of a large training department. I also qualified as a coach and was part of my firm's coaching team, carrying out 1:1 coaching sessions for senior managers.

I am Chair of the Teaching and Learning Committee and am also the SEN link governor.

Laura Blackmore

When I first visited Wigginton, it was immediately noticeable how much the staff and children love this school. I was therefore thrilled to join the school in September 2017 as Deputy Head. As of May 2024, I have also been employed as co-head for half of the week whilst Mr Laycock supports another school in York.

My responsibilities include safeguarding, maths subject leader and assessment coordinator. As a governor, I serve on the Teaching and Learning Committee; I work with members of our local community in ensuring the best standards of education for our children through our love of learning and the kindness that is so apparent when you enter the school.

Robert Lister

I first became involved with strategic primary school life in 1991 as a newly promoted manager working for British Telecom (now semi-retired). Working with senior lecturers from the then Ripon and York St John College, this one year project was investigating primary school progression and attainment. Keen to continue after the project concluded I had the good fortune to be elected as a parent governor at Oaken Grove primary school, Haxby. I have continued to be a primary school governor since 1992 at various schools across the York authority – Oaken Grove, Headlands, New Earswick, Wigginton and Stockton on the Forest. I have held several posts as chair of governors, vice chair of governors and chair of the Finance & Resources Committee and health and Safety Governor. I am married with three children and four grandchildren. Prior to accepting this post as a LA governor, I was a governor at Stockton on the Forest Primary school, where I was vice chair of the governing body and chair of finance. I have been involved with several OfSTED inspections, the most recent being 2015. I am on the Finance & Resources committee at Wigginton School. I am passionate about primary education and enabling children to have a sound educational base to equip them for the future (life-long learning). Hopefully, along with other key stakeholders I can assist the school to achieve this outcome.

Helen Jones

I moved to York in 2010 after completing a Post Graduate Certificate in Education at York St John University. I taught mainly KS2 classes in schools within Harrogate and York, and progressed to lead Mathematics, Assessment and KS2 across a large primary Multi Academy Trust. Alongside these roles, I qualified as an NCETM Primary Mastery Specialist, and became Assistant Maths Hub Lead for Yorkshire Ridings in 2018. In 2024, I began my role as Primary Assistant Director for the NCETM.

I have two young boys at Wigginton, and am honoured to be able to work alongside the Wigginton team to support in enhancing education and our wonderful community in my role as Governor on the Teaching and Learning Committee.

Alex Hughes

I’m Alex and I was delighted to be appointed Parent Governor in autumn 2024. I serve on the Teaching and Learning Committee and am the link governor for EYFS. I have three young children, the first at Wigginton Primary School, with the others to follow in the not too distant future. I’m also on the Committee at The Wonder Years which offers pre-school and wrap around and holiday provision for the local community. I’m keen to grow the already close links between the two organisations.

Annabelle Partington

I am a teacher with over 15 years experience across York and North Yorkshire mainly in EYFS and KS1 but more recently in LKS2. I came to Wigginton in 2019 after taking a sabbatical year to travel the world. I could immediately see that the school was a 'family,' very much at the heart of the local community and am proud to be a member of staff here. I sit on the Teaching and Learning Committee.
